Permanent & Nationwide
E15, an American-made, lower-cost fuel blend containing 15 percent ethanol, is approved for use in more than 96% of vehicles on the road today. Drivers typically save at least 25 cents per gallon when filling up with E15. Not only does year-round E15 help consumers save money, but it keeps an important market open for America’s farmers and ethanol producers while bolstering energy independence and reducing vehicle emissions.
Everything you need to know about E15
“Here in the heartland, here in the very heart of America, what you all stand for, what this amazing business behind me stands for, what our farmers and ranchers stand for, is how we truly save the future of the country. And we do believe that E15 is a big part of that. We're working day in and day out, not just across the executive branch, but obviously in the legislative branch too through Congress to ensure that we can do just that.”
— USDA Sec. Brooke Rollins, at an appearance in March 2025 at RFA member company Elite Octane
Due to an outdated provision in the Clean Air Act, E15 blends are not allowed to be sold during the summer driving season (June 1 to September 15) in more than 70% of the country. EPA has used last-minute, ad hoc emergency waivers to make E15 available every summer driving season since 2019. While this stop-gap approach has helped existing retailers continue selling E15, a permanent, legislative solution is needed. For the environmental and economic benefits of E15 to be fully realized, the marketplace needs long-term certainty, and it is time for Congress to pass legislation—like the bipartisan Nationwide Consumer and Fuel Retailer Choice Act—that would deliver permanent year-round access for E15.
“Strengthening the farm safety net is an important priority of mine. As is a stable biofuels policy, including year-round access to E15 and timely and meaningful updates to the renewable volume obligations that matter to ethanol producers in America’s heartland.”
— Senate Majority Leader John Thune in March 2025 comments on the Senate floor
