E15 and Higher Blends

Approved in 9 out of 10 Cars Today

Consumers will benefit from more competition and greater savings as E15 use expands as ethanol is the lowest cost, highest octane fuel additive available to refiners and gasoline marketers. EPA has approved the use of E15 gas for 9 out of 10 cars on the road today. Nearly all automakers explicitly approve and provide full warranty coverage for E15 use.

On May 31, 2019, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, at the direction of then-President Trump, issued a final rule allowing retailers to sell E15 gas year-round in all parts of the country.  This action removed an unnecessary regulatory barrier to E15 commercialization and provided American drivers with options at the pump and access to environmentally friendly fuels.  Unfortunately, the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals in July 2021 reversed that rule. RFA and its allies are working on a permanent solution to the RVP barrier in the summer driving season.

Today, E15 stations number over 3,400 across the country.  The U.S. Department of Agriculture has provided infrastructure incentive programs to encourage additional fuel marketers to adopt E15.  Several other local and state-level programs also exist and further encourage and incentivize fuel marketers to offer higher blends of ethanol.
